Embracing New Beginnings in the Quiet of January

Embracing New Beginnings in the Quiet of January

Happy (belated) new year, friends!

January always feels like a bit of a reset. After the whirlwind of the festive season—with all its orders, workshops, and the buzz of holiday spirit—there’s a noticeable quiet that settles in. For those of us running small businesses, this shift can feel a little jarring at first. The energy of December, when everyone is rushing around picking out the perfect handmade gifts and joining in on pottery workshops, is replaced by a slower pace. It can feel like the calm after the storm, and while that calm is much-needed, it’s also a time of adjustment (and sometimes panic, let's be real).

But here’s the thing: as challenging as the quiet months can be, they also hold a world of opportunity. The excitement of the festive rush is wonderful, but it’s in these quieter moments that I can really dig into my creativity. It’s a chance to reflect on what’s been working, to try new ideas, and to dream up future projects that may have been on the backburner. So while January may feel slower in terms of sales and workshops, it’s also a chance to lay the foundation for new and exciting things ahead.

One of the things I truly value about running my ceramic business is the opportunity to host pottery workshops at independent venues around Nottingham. These local spots have a special energy; they’re places where people can gather, share their creativity, and support small businesses. Being part of this community is something I’m incredibly proud of. I love seeing people light up as they create something with their own hands, and it’s this connection that keeps me motivated. Even in the quieter months, I know that the chance to host these workshops, connect with participants, and foster a sense of community is something truly meaningful.

But, like any creative business, finding balance is key. I’ve learned that it’s equally important to carve out time to simply *make*. It can be easy to get caught up in the administrative side of things—organizing events, managing orders, and handling all the behind-the-scenes details—but I’ve come to appreciate the value of time spent in the studio, letting the creative process flow without the pressure of deadlines. These moments allow me to experiment, explore new ideas, and refine my craft. I'd like more of that in 2025.

One exciting new project I’m working on right now is an exploration into the history of colour, and how clashing colours can affect our emotions. It’s a concept that’s fascinated me for a while—how certain colour combinations can spark feelings of calm, joy, or even tension. In ceramics, the way colour interacts with shape and texture can completely transform a piece, and I’m excited to explore how different colour palettes can evoke specific emotional responses. There’s something magical about how colour can communicate feelings without words, and I’m eager to see where this project takes me as I experiment with bold contrasts and unexpected pairings.

Currently reading for research: 'Colour Clash' - Counterprint. 'The History of Colour' - Neil Parkinson.

As always, I am beyond thankful for the support from all of you—my wonderful customers, friends, and pottery enthusiasts. Your enthusiasm, whether you’re attending a workshop, purchasing a piece, or simply following along on social media, makes all the difference. Running a small business can feel overwhelming at times, but knowing I have such a supportive community behind me gives me the strength and motivation to keep pushing forward. You’re not just buying pottery—you’re helping a dream continue to grow, and for that, I’m endlessly grateful.

Here’s to a new year full of fresh ideas, creative breakthroughs, and the continued journey of making, sharing, and growing together. I can’t wait to see where this year takes us.

Love,
Heather ☺️
